Food Action Society of the North Okanagan (FASNO)
We are a non-profit, charitable organization registered under the BC Societies Act (#S-52784) based in the North Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada.
Our Mission is to improve local food security by cultivating a healthy, sustainable regional food system through education and community action.
We Accomplish our Mission through community outreach & education, policy & planning, and community project development. We rely on volunteers, fundraising, and donations to meet our goals.
Community Outreach and Education
The Food Action Society of the North Okanagan helps facilitate community action as well as provide education in our priority areas by creating displays, hosting food sustainability film nights, arranging workshops. One of our major social outreaches, Roots ‘n Brews, supports our local producers, generates interest in the community, and raises funds to help support the Society and its projects.
Policy and Planning
The Food Action Society of the North Okanagan is actively involved in food policy and planning initiatives. Notably by providing representation on the Regional Growth Strategy’s Agriculture and Food Systems working group and participation with the formation of a community Emergency Food Action Team to help meet to meet the growing demand for charitable food.
The Food Action Society actively develops projects as needs and opportunities are identified and capacity allows. Funding is sought through grant proposals or through fundraising, and projects are delivered with the help of consultants or through committees and volunteers.
The Food Action Society was formed as a result of community consultations held during the Food Security Assessment and Action Plan (2007) that indicated a number of community food programs needed support and/or had discontinued as a result of not having a secure host agency. It was recognized that no local Society was mandated to address community food security and that having a society that could develop food security and food system initiatives would be an important asset and service for the area. Incorporation of the society was completed October 17, 2007.
The North Okanagan Food Charter is a reflection of our community food values and provides individuals and organizations with an opportunity to collectively commit to action. It was crafted with input from community members across the region and has been endorsed by the City of Vernon. We invite you to add your voice.
